PADI Divemaster
Turn your passion for diving into something more.
The PADI Divemaster course is the first PADI professional level and the start of your path to becoming a leader in the diving world. Working closely with a PADI Instructor, you'll take your knowledge and skills to a professional level, learning to supervise diving activities, organise and lead dives, and assist instructors while they train students.
What you'll learn
You'll develop the theoretical knowledge, in-water skills and leadership abilities needed to take on the role and responsibilities of a PADI professional.
You'll refine your dive skills to demonstration quality, deepening your understanding of dive planning and management, supervising certified divers, assessing environmental conditions, preventing and managing problems, and assisting students during PADI courses.
You'll also learn to be a role model of conduct and professionalism for other divers, developing organisational, decision-making and group-management skills.
Course structure
- Knowledge development: dive theory, the Divemaster's role and responsibilities, supervising diving activities, risk management and the programmes a PADI Divemaster is authorised to conduct.
- Water skills: exercises to assess and develop physical fitness and confidence in the water, including specific swimming, floating and rescue assessments.
- Professional-level dive skills: refining the core scuba skills to a standard suitable for demonstrating them to students.
- Workshops and practical application: exercises in managing and supervising dives, mapping a dive site, search and recovery and the other competencies in the Divemaster programme.
- Field experience: taking part in real training activities and dives, working alongside a PADI Instructor to gain experience in supervising divers and assisting on courses.
Divemaster is a professional pathway, and its length depends on how the programme is organised, on your starting experience and on your progress.
Prerequisites
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver certifications, or qualifying certifications.
- CPR and First Aid training (e.g. EFR Primary and Secondary Care) within the previous 24 months.
- At least 40 logged dives to start the course; at least 60 to be certified.
- A medical statement of fitness to dive signed by a physician within the previous 12 months.
What's next
Once certified, a PADI Divemaster joins the ranks of PADI professionals and, while maintaining the required professional status, can supervise certain diving activities, guide certified divers and assist PADI Instructors during training. It's the first step towards the Instructor Development Course (IDC).
